October is Bullying Prevention Month
Workplace bullying can pose a safety challenge that has to be handled with care and in consideration to your job. According to UC Davis Health policy, bullying is defined as “repeated behavior that a reasonable person would find hostile, offensive, and unrelated to business interests: bullying may be verbal, nonverbal, written and/or physical.” (Policy 1649)
These factors as well as others can cause your work experience to be an unpleasant one.
Here are some things you can do to help with workplace bullying:
- Call attention to the bully’s action directly, calmly, and professionally.
- Document the pattern of incidents and contact your manager or supervisor to report what is happening.
- If you notice that a coworker is being bullied, call attention to the behavior, offer emotional support, and encourage them to report the behavior if it continues.
