Breathe, Move, Laugh: ASAP Team Shares What Keeps Them Mentally Well

This World Mental Health Day (October 10), our Academic and Staff Assistance Program (ASAP) team is sharing what helps them stay calm and clear-headed when life gets hectic.

Team Favorites

Exercise is a big one for me. I used to do half marathons, then road biking, and now I attend HIIT classes at the gym at least 3 times a week. For me, it’s a great way to release tension and stress.

Having pets also keeps my mental health in check. I enjoy taking the dogs for a walk and watching their goofy faces at the dog park.

Susana Becerra, LCSW

Mine are visual imagery and Reiki. Reiki workshops are offered for staff at UC Davis Health, which can be a wonderful way to reset and recharge.

Marina Podoreanu, LCSW

The UC Davis waterway and a bridge surrounded by yellow, green, and orange trees.

Walking outside, especially in the UC Davis Arboretum, is one of my go-to practices. I also pause to name 4 things I see, 3 things I smell and 2 things I hear.

Alison Ward, Ph.D.

Creative arts and music, picking up a new hobby and solitude are my top choices for self-care.

Talithia Allen, HR Assistant III

I join the lunchtime meditation sessions from Occupational Health whenever I can. I also make time to walk or exercise in nature.

Sharon Ree, BS, Program Coordinator

I enjoy gardening (or at least learning about it when time is short) and watching humorous videos, movies or series.

Aurora Cazares, LPCC

Regular walks with my partner and dog, staying involved in the community and daily meditation all help keep me balanced.

Taylor Baldwin, LMFT

Silent meditation and mindful breathing help me reset. I also find joy in helping others, like cooking meals for friends who need support.

Uma Anand, Ph.D.
