UC Davis’s three-month Group Mentoring Program has been a transformative means of professional development since it returned in 2022 after a hiatus during the pandemic.

The program pairs mentors with small groups of mentees, including staff members from both UC Davis and UC Davis Health. Throughout the months, participants have the opportunity to expand their networks, gain deeper insights into the organization, uncover their Gallup CliftonStrengths, and chart a course for their professional growth, whether it involves pursuing new roles or refining strategies for personal and career fulfillment.

Will Peters, a trainer with Learning and Development, shared, “as in years past, mentoring will focus on proactive, thoughtful career development. More emphasis will be placed on nurturing the growth within employees' current roles, amplifying their satisfaction and fulfillment in their chosen careers … We’re excited for this opportunity to empower employees to enact positive change in their professional journey and overall lives.”

Listening and growth

Feedback from the CommUNITY Feedback Survey and the Davis campus Staff Engagement Survey indicated a desire for more professional development opportunities. In response, Learning and Development (now Learning and Organizational Development) doubled the size of the Group Mentoring Program in 2022. That number has grown year over year as a result of boosted engagement and Learning and Organizational Development’s commitment to promote development opportunities more broadly.
