Award Criteria

The STAR Award has two levels of cash awards, $500 and $1,000. Individual employees may be recognized with a STAR award based on one or more of the following performance standards:

  • Going above and beyond to deliver excellent service.
  • Going above and beyond to provide excellent care.
  • Exemplary contributions in the achievement of an important project.

Input will be required from the employee’s manager/supervisor if someone other than the employee’s manager/supervisor is nominating the employee.


Eligibility

Non-represented Professional and Support Staff (PSS) career employees, including supervisors, Clerical (CX) employees, and Management and Senior Professional (MSP) program not participating in the Clinical Enterprise Management Recognition Program (CEMRP).

  • Who is not eligible?
  • *Exclusively represented employees are eligible only if the applicable collective bargaining agreement authorizes participation in the STAR Plan.

    *MSP employees participating in the CEMRP are not eligible.

    *Policy-covered PSS employees in the following appointment types are not eligible: contract in a position less than 6 months, per diem, limited, floater, and casual restricted

    *An employee may not receive an award under the STAR Plan if the employee is a participant in an incentive award plan that prohibits the receipt of a recognition award.

  • When do we submit?
  • *STAR awards may be presented at any time during the Plan year and should be awarded as soon as possible after the accomplishment or event in order to provide immediate recognition to employees.

    *Departments must submit STAR Plan cash award nominations to Human Resources on or before May 31st of the plan year. Award nominations submitted to Human Resources in June of the Plan Year will be returned to departments as past the deadline for processing, in accordance with year-end closing schedules.

    *An employee may only receive one STAR per Plan year award regardless the amount level.  STAR awards are subject to taxation.

    *Cumulative STAR Plan cash awards and a CEMRP 2 award paid to an employee in a Plan year may not exceed 5% of the employee’s base salary or $10,000,whichever amount is lower.
  • Can we do Team Awards?
  • Team Awards may be granted to teams of employees who meet one or more of the performance standards on a project within the same department or for work on the development and/or implementation of inter-departmental projects. Input will be required from the team leader and each employee’s supervisor/manager if someone other than the manager/supervisor is nominating the team. The employee’s department head is responsible for confirming that the employee is eligible for an award and must approve the employee’s award, regardless of the funding source for the award.
  • Basic Eligibility Requirements:
  • *Completion of the probationary period

    *On active pay status or on an approved unpaid leave

    *Have received a “Meets Expectations” or better overall rating on their most recent annual performance evaluation. Employees who have not yet received an annual performance evaluation may be eligible for an award if their manager confirms on the nomination form that they are “meeting expectations.”

    *Have completed the Mandatory Annual Training (MAT) required by The Joint Commission, State of California, Department of Public Health and UC Davis Health Hospital Policy 2903.

    *Policy covered contract employees who have at least 6 months of continuous service on a single contract are also eligible to participate in STAR Award program at UC Davis Health pending HR approval and if they meet the above requirements.
