The Operating Room Training Program (ORTP)

The Operating Room Training Program (ORTP) is a program designed for New Graduate Nurses who want to become an OR Nurse, in both Circulating and Scrub Roles.

This is a 6-month program with two weeks of classroom training where the New Graduate Nurse will learn about the Fundamentals of the Perioperative Nurse. Utilizing the Association of PeriOperative Nurse (AORN) Guidelines for Perioperative Practice, the New Graduate Nurse will learn perioperative nurse principles such as the introduction of the perioperative role, surgical asepsis, patient safety, the foundations of surgery, and foundations of surgical anesthesia.

After this 6-month program, the new graduate nurse will be a fully prepared to scrub or circulate in any of our surgical areas such as the Main Operating Room, Children’s Surgery Center, Same Day Surgery Center, and our New University Tower OR. The OR Training Program graduate will be able to describe the three phases of the perioperative process, explain the preoperative interview process using EMR, and comprehend the components of the Universal Protocol.

This program is done in combination of the New Graduate Residency program.
