Wherever Travel Calls: Celebrating Sandy Batchelor’s Retirement
After 14 years of employee-focused service, Sandy Batchelor is retiring from her role as HR’s WorkLife Manager.
Throughout her tenure, Sandy has been instrumental in developing and leading programs that support the well-being and work-life integration of UC Davis employees.

Under Sandy’s leadership, the WorkLife program has achieved many notable successes that have helped recognize employees while supporting their ability to manage work and family obligations, including an expanded lactation program, a revitalized Take Our Children to Work Day, the Student Parent Child Care Grant, a new Child Development Center for employees in Sacramento, the launch of UC Davis’ flexible work model during the pandemic, and the return of the Chancellor’s Outstanding Staff Awards in 2024.
Sandy’s passion for creating solutions and fostering balance for employees has left an indelible mark on the UC Davis community. Her efforts have not only enhanced individual employee experiences but also contributed to a more supportive, engaged, and inclusive workplace culture.
In retirement, Sandy plans to devote her time to volunteering with organizations focused on animal welfare, environmental protection, and humanitarian causes. She looks forward to being fully immersed in this new chapter of life: helping others, living closer to nature, and connecting with fellow explorers of the Earth.
Sandy lovingly describes her family as an “airline family,” which gives them the freedom to travel wherever inspiration calls. She is especially excited to spend more time with her son and daughter—both commercial pilots like their dad—who are still early in their careers and open to adventure. Together, they plan to embrace their wanderlust before life calls them to settle down.
A particularly special part of Sandy’s retirement will be the time she spends in her home and community in San Pancho, a small town on the Pacific Coast of Mexico. It’s a place close to her heart—warm, welcoming, and rich with opportunities to enjoy nature, community, and the rhythms of a slower, more intentional life.
“I have appreciated the individuals that I have worked with over the past 14 years—people who strive for excellence, bring unique stories and perspectives, express kindness, make you laugh, and share my deep regard for the institution, the mission, and the people within.”
Sandy’s legacy at UC Davis is one of compassion, innovation, and unwavering commitment to the well-being of others. Her contributions have set a remarkable standard for employee support—one that will continue to make UC Davis and UC Davis Health a best employer for working families for years to come.
