Types of Coverage

Basic Disability

UC provides automatic enrollment in Basic Disability plan at no cost to you. Disability insurance provides coverage if you are unable to work due to a pregnancy/childbirth or non-work-related disabling injury or illness. It pays 55 percent of your eligible earnings, up to a maximum of $800 per month, less taxes. 

  • Basic Disability provides benefits for up to 24-weeks.
  • 14-day waiting period before you begin receiving benefits.
  • You must use up to 22 days of sick leave, if available.

Voluntary Short-Term Disability (VSTD)

The plan provides up to 60 percent of your eligible earnings, to a maximum benefit of $15,000 per month. Voluntary Short-Term Disability income is partially taxable.

  • VSTD provides benefits for up to 24-weeks.
  • 14-day waiting period before you begin receiving benefits.
  • You must use up to 22 days of sick leave, if available.

Voluntary Long-Term Disability (VLTD)

The plan provides up to 60 percent of your eligible earnings, to a maximum benefit of $15,000 per month. Voluntary Long-Term Disability income is generally not taxable.

  • You’ll be covered after the VSTD benefit ends or at 26-weeks. 
  • Benefit generally continues up until your Social Security retirement age for most ongoing conditions.
  • This benefit provides ongoing coverage for disability conditions beyond six months. Employees with a lot of sick leave accrued or academic employees eligible for paid medical leave, may consider only enrolling in the Long-Term Disability benefit. For all other employees, please consider enrolling in both VSTD and VLTD.
