Insights For Parents

Join us for 60 insightful minutes to inform, inspire and support parents and provide information for professionals working with families. Each session will feature:

* Current accurate information drawn from the developmental sciences, cognitive neuroscience, and positive psychology.

* A Personal Practice to try at home with suggestions for exploring some of the ideas presented.

* Clear suggestions for applying the information.

November 28:  Insights on Discipline. Ticon III, Training & Development Room 2400, 12 – 1 pm

This wide-ranging presentation pulls together information from many fields to provide a fact based practical overview of effective ways to guide your child’s behavior. Discusses the power of consistency and inconsistency, the challenge of using rewards, the concept of positive parenting, and strategies to promote emotional balance.

December 12: Insights on Parenting with Empathy. Ticon III, Training & Development Room 2400, 12 – 1 pm Empathy starts with the ability to experience the same emotions someone else is experiencing, or to understand the feelings of another.  In practice, it involves empathetic reasoning plus acting with kindness and compassion.  This presentation explores ways to take your child’s perspective and still be a loving authority. It also offers ideas for helping your child build empathy, and strategies for nurturing positivity, self-esteem and self-compassion.

December 19: Insights on the Science of Love. Ticon III, Training & Development Room 2400, 12 – 1 pm

This presentation brings together very recent research on brain and behavior to discuss physiological and neurological patterns associated with the experience of love and how these influence positivity, interpersonal interactions, and overall well-being. The talk focusses on attachment, trust, and connection between parents and children.  The session closes with a classic love-centered guided meditation.  This is a richly supportive and scientifically grounded discussion inspired by the holiday season.

Dr. Dunlea has an MA in Psychology from the University of London, a PhD in Psycholinguistics from the University of Southern California, and held a post-doctoral position in psycholinguistics at the Max-Planck-Institute in Nijmegen, Holland.  She was on the faculty at USC for 15 years with a triple appointment in Psychology, Health Sciences and Linguistics and currently teaches in the Department of Psychology at UC Davis. Her research on cognition and language has been supported by the NSF, the NIMH and the March of Dimes.  She recently created a business and associated website called, “Insights For Parents” which integrates science, practical information, and wisdom from many traditions to support the growth and well-being of both children and parents.  She offers consultations to professionals as well as parent coaching and parent education to families. Anne Dunlea has been practicing and teaching meditation for over 30 years and is the mother of two daughters.
