Reference Tips and Guidelines

  • Use the same format for your name, address and telephone number as you used on your resume.
  • If you are printing a hard copy of your references, use the same paper stock as your resume.
  • If you chose to use a person who has left the organization or has retired, it is up to you to find that person’s current email and telephone number.
  • It is very important to call your references ahead of time and email an updated copy of your resume to them as a courtesy. Prepare them for who might be calling and what position you are applying for. Suggest skills or other qualifications that you want them to emphasize.
  • Write each of your references to thank them for their time and let them know you appreciate their efforts and keep them informed of your activities. Be sure to notify them when you have accepted a new position.
