Medical Coding and Abstracting Program (MCAP)

There are no cohorts scheduled at this time, please check back at a future date.

This program combines Language of Medicine and Step-by-Step Medical Coding in a blending learning format of classroom, online, and distance learning.

Since a basic overview of medical terminology is important to many career fields within the healthcare industry and is essential to the medical abstractor, this fast-paced program will explore the basic elements of medical terminology; prefixes, roots, and suffixes which form many medical terms.

In addition, participants in this program will study the coding rules for the Current Procedural Terminology (CPT), International Classification of Diseases, Tenth Revision, Clinical Modification (ICD-10-CM) and Healthcare Common Procedure Coding System (HCPCS Level II (HCPCS) coding systems, and then apply the rules to code patient services.

A variety of payment systems is also explored in this program. The medical topics of Medicare fraud, Health Maintenance Organizations (HMOs), and Quality Improvement Organizations (QIOs) are also reviewed.

Upon successful completion of the twelve-month program, participants will receive a certificate of completion from UC Davis Health and will be prepared to take the American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC), Certified Coding Professional (CPC) exam.

The MCAP program and materials costs, and certification fees will be covered by UC Davis Health.
