Susan Gilbert

Susan Gilbert was named the Associate Vice Chancellor – Human Resources at UC Davis in June 2012 and is responsible for all aspects of Human Resource strategy and delivery of services across the University. Under her leadership and direction, she oversees Senior Management Group Administration, Academic & Staff Assistance Programs, Employee & Labor Relations, Disability Management, Employment & Outreach, Benefits, Compensation, Administration Services, Staff Development & Professional Services and Work Life. Highly committed to the University’s Vision of Excellence, she is guided in leading strategic campus-wide initiatives to motivate, support and develop staff, faculty and students.

Gilbert has been a Senior Human Resources Executive since 1982 affiliated with a number of private and public sector employers. Susan is recognized for her innovative policy design & administration, cutting-edge diversity & inclusion initiatives, visionary organizational design constructs, accelerated leadership development programs and dynamic professional recruitment. Originally from Wisconsin, she attended the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee receiving an M.S. in Educational Psychology and a B.S. in Psychology. Shortly thereafter, she moved to Houston, Texas where she served in executive roles in banking and the insurance industry. Gilbert's most recent HR career was at the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center where she devoted eighteen years of her profession to the organization with appointments ranging from Faculty & Staff Services to Academic Administration, Clinical Programs and Diversity & Inclusion. Before joining the University of California Davis, she was Principal and Founder of SMG Consulting, specializing in helping healthcare client organizations build cultural competence and inclusion in their strategic formulation.

Gilbert is well-known in the Human Resources field, with speaking engagements throughout the U.S. including the Institute for Diversity National Conference, Washington Panel of Healthcare Reform, Society of Intercultural Education and Society for Human Resource Management to name a few. In her leadership role at UC Davis, Gilbert is committed to the advancement of education, patient care and research by leading HR strategic initiatives and building  partnerships across the University.
